An Overview of the Family Support Program in Immigrating to Canada:
Family reunification is one of the cornerstones of Canada’s immigration system. Since the end of World War II, Canada has sought to welcome immigrants to strengthen its economy, reunite families, and provide humanitarian and compassionate reasons. The family class is the second largest group of newcomers to be welcomed in Canada under the Immigration Level Program. Canada pursues the highest level of immigration in its history to support its post-COVID economic recovery. Thus, Canada intends to welcome more than 400,000 new immigrants per year, of which more than 100,000 immigrants per year are in the family group.
The country’s immigration system is governed by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada, or IRCC for short. This section was formerly known as Citizenship and Immigration Canada, or CIC for short. The IRCC establishes and manages the Canadian Family Financing Program. This requires establishing program criteria, accepting and reviewing family financial support applications, and submitting a permanent and temporary residence visa.
What does family sponsorship mean in Canada?
Financial support has two main aspects:
- Allows your family members to immigrate to Canada and obtain permanent residency (PR).
- As a person, you need to make a commitment to meet basic needs and support that person financially.
How COVID-19 does affect family financial support?
The Canadian Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) is still accepting applications for family support. While the processing of financial aid applications has been affected by the Corona virus epidemic, the Government of Canada continues to seek innovative and compassionate ways to reunite families.
Here are some steps you can take to begin the process.
IRCC to reduce waiting times and process applications faster, it has increased the number of employees reviewing spouse support programs by 66 percent. The IRCC has stated that it may implement biometric facilitation measures and introduce technology for interviewing remote applicants. Sponsor your spouse, parents, grandparents, children or other family members as long as you have all the necessary financial support. If the person you sponsored received Employment Insurance (EI) or CERB during the commitment period, this does not mean that you are negligent about your obligations.
Can I sponsor?
To support family members financially, a person must have several of the following:
- A Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
- 18 years or more
- Able to support a sponsored person for several years
Who can be sponsored?
- Spouses and partners of ordinary law
- Dependent children
- Parents and grandparents
There are exceptions to this rule, and it is possible to support a non-immediate family member (eg sister, niece or uncle) if possible:
This person does not have other family members who can support him or her, or you have legally adopted them and they have the definition of a dependent child.
What are the financial needs for financial support?
As a sponsor, you must sign a sponsorship agreement with one of your sponsored family members. This is your commitment to sponsoring the basic needs (food, clothing, shelter and health needs not covered by public health services) of the person you are sponsoring. Enjoy or go beyond LICO, for example in the following cases:
You support a spouse or partner who has a dependent child and that dependent child has one or more children, or you sponsor a dependent child who has one or more dependent children, or you are a parent or grandparent You support yourself financially. If you live in Quebec, you must qualify for Quebec and your income will be assessed by the Quebec Ministry of Immigration.
What is a sponsorship commitment?
You will be asked to sign a “commitment” to fulfill your legal liability to a family member you are sponsoring. If that family member is in need of government social assistance, you must return the money. This commitment will be valid for a period of time based on the family member you are sponsoring, and will not be revoked even if circumstances change (ie if The person you are sponsoring becomes a Canadian citizen (if you are divorced or separated, or if you have financial problems).
Super Visa application
The Super Visa program allows parents and grandparents to travel to Canada on a multiple-entry extended visa, which can take up to 10 years in total. This program is always open and can be used simultaneously with PGP.
To be eligible for the Super Visa program, you must:
- Be the parent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
- Sign the invitation letter on behalf of your child or grandchild
- Have health insurance
- Apply for a special visa from outside Canada
- In addition, your Canadian child or grandchild must prove that their family has the minimum income
